Sawdust

  • Sawdust is an excellent, long-lasting soil conditioner, suitable for both clay and sandy soil. It helps improve the soil structure and water retention capacity.

  • When using sawdust from a commercial site, ensure that it has not come from chemically preserved or treated wood, as this may harm your plants. Instead, opt for untreated or natural wood sources.
  • Always ask to avoid taking unnecessary risks with your garden.
  • Did you know? Sawdust can also be used as mulch, which helps regulate soil temperature, suppress weeds, and retain moisture. However, when using sawdust as mulch, it is essential to add nitrogen-rich fertilizers, as sawdust can temporarily deplete the soil's nitrogen content.

Remember to use sawdust sparingly, as a layer of about 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) should be sufficient for most gardens. Additionally, it's a good idea to mix sawdust with other organic materials like compost or aged manure to create a balanced soil amendment.
