Leaves

Leaves are an excellent resource because they are free!

  • They are a superior soil conditioner compared to peat moss, particularly if you have clay soil.
  • Leaves are rich in nutrients that your plants will appreciate.
  • They also attract worms and microorganisms that aid in aerating the compost pile and accelerate decomposition.
  • You might need to add nitrogen to balance the carbon produced by decomposing leaves.
  • For instance, a 10 kg (22 lbs) bag of 7-7-7 fertilizer can treat 10 cubic yards (or meters) of fresh leaves. You will need to double that amount for dry leaves.
