Newspaper Mulch

  • Newspapers can be effective at reducing weeds and retaining moisture in the soil.
  • Don't apply newspaper mulch on a windy day, or the whole neighborhood will be reading your news!
  • You will need to place at least 12 pages over each area and overlap the edges.
  • Cover the newspapers with hay, straw, grass clippings, or sawdust to hold them down.

  • If your garden has earwigs, you may want to choose a different mulch, as these pests enjoy hiding in newspaper mulch while they chew on your plants.
