Kids’ Valley Garden

Carpet

  • Some types of carpet are designed for outdoor use, but you can also repurpose indoor carpet for one or two seasons.
  • Avoid using canvas or rubber-backed carpets as they deteriorate quickly and create a mess.
  • Choose dark colors to help warm the soil.
  • Lay the carpet down in the area you want to mulch, overlapping the edges where two pieces meet.
  • Use chalk to mark out your rows and holes for your seedlings if you wish to cover a larger area with carpet.
  • Ask an adult for assistance when cutting the carpet with heavy scissors or a utility knife.
  • In the fall, after harvesting the garden, rinse off the carpet and ensure it is completely dry before storing it in a garage or shed for the winter.
